School of scalefin anthia fish (Pseudanthias squamipinnis), Fiji

Anthias are members of the family Serranidae (basses, basslets, groupers) and make up the subfamily Anthiadinae. Anthias make up a sizeable portion of the population of pink, orange, and yellow reef fishes seen swarming in most coral reef photography and film. Anthias are mostly small, thus are quite popular within the ornamental fish trade. They form complex social structures based on the number of males and females and also their position on the reef itself, and are mainly zooplankton feeders. They occur in all tropical oceans and seas of the world

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a vibrant school of scalefin anthia fish, known scientifically as Pseudanthias squamipinnis, in the crystal-clear waters of Fiji. These mesmerizing creatures belong to the family Serranidae and are part of the subfamily Anthiadinae. With their stunning pink, orange, and yellow hues, anthias play a significant role in creating the colorful spectacle often witnessed in coral reef photography and film. Anthias are beloved within the ornamental fish trade due to their small size and striking appearance. However, beyond their aesthetic appeal lies a fascinating social structure that revolves around gender ratios and positioning on the reef itself. Zooplankton forms their primary source of sustenance as they gracefully navigate tropical oceans across the globe. In this underwater scene captured by Danita Delimont's lens, we witness nature's tranquility at its finest. The large group of these scalefin anthia fish creates an awe-inspiring sight against a backdrop of pristine sea life. As they swim together harmoniously with synchronized movements, one cannot help but marvel at the beauty inherent in nature. This remarkable photograph serves as a testament to both the diversity and splendor found beneath our planet's waves. It invites us to appreciate not only these enchanting creatures but also fosters an understanding of our responsibility towards preserving such delicate ecosystems for generations to come.
