False-colour TEM of hepatitis B viruses

False-colour transmission electron micrograph of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) particles - the small red spheres and tubules. HBV causes acute & chronic forms of liver inflammmation. It appears in 3 structural forms: spheres 20 nanometres (nm) in diameter; tubules of similar diameter, and Dane particle spheres 40nm in diameter. HBV is transmitted in infected blood; symptoms develop after an incubation period of 1-6 months and include headaches, fever and jaundice. The presence of the Australia antigen in blood confirms the diagnosis. Magnification x16, 000 at 6x7cm size. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases a false-colour transmission electron micrograph of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) particles. The small red spheres and tubules depicted here represent the three structural forms of HBV, which include 20-nanometer diameter spheres, similar-sized tubules, and larger 40-nanometer diameter Dane particle spheres. Hepatitis B is notorious for causing both acute and chronic liver inflammation, making it a significant public health concern worldwide. This image provides us with a glimpse into the intricate world of viruses as we witness the minute details of these infectious agents. Transmitted through infected blood, HBV exhibits an incubation period ranging from one to six months before symptoms begin to manifest. These symptoms often include headaches, fever, and jaundice - highlighting the severity of this viral infection. To confirm a diagnosis of Hepatitis B, medical professionals rely on detecting the presence of the Australia antigen in blood samples. This crucial marker helps identify individuals affected by this potentially debilitating disease. With its impressive magnification at x16,000 and printed at a size of 6x7cm, this photograph serves as a testament to our ever-advancing knowledge in virology and microbiology. It reminds us that despite their minuscule size, viruses like HBV can have profound impacts on human health - urging scientists around the globe to continue their relentless pursuit towards finding effective treatments or preventive measures against such formidable adversaries.
