17th century world map

World map, published around 1664 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, by Dutch mapmaker Joan Blaeu (c.1599- 1673). The Latin title is Nova et Accuratissima Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula (new and accurate all world map). Blaeu's maps built on those made by Mercator and Hondius in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The Blaeu maps emphasized fine art and colours, being the most expensive of the time. Two mapmakers are shown at upper right and upper left, together with a wide variety of mythical beings. The poorly-mapped regions include the far north and south, parts of the Americas (left-hand hemisphere), and the Far East. The western coast of Australia (New Holland) was discovered in 1616

Baruch Spinoza, caricature

Baruch Spinoza. Caricature of the Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza (1632-1677). Spinoza is considered to be one of Western philosophy's most important philosophers. He believed that nothing exists independently except for God, and that everything that exists does so as a part of God. He considered the Universe and Nature to be God, rather than the personalised Judeo-Christian deity. He was expelled from Holland's Jewish community for these heretical views. His seminal work, Ethics (1677), outlined these views and has become one of the most important early modern philosophical works

John Milton, English poet

John Milton (1608-1674), English poet. Milton was born in London and was educated at St. Paul's School and at Christ's College, Cambridge. After receiving his MA in 1632 Milton embarked on six years of private study, including travels in Europe where he met Grotius, Galileo and Tasso. On his return to England Milton wrote extensively on church issues such as the power of the bishops and the morality of divorce. The English Civil War gave Milton the chance to flourish in a republican setting, but the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660 meant Milton had to spend some years in hiding from the authorities. It was in this period he started to write his classic blank verse epic poem, Paradise Lost, reflecting his despair at the failure of the revolution. This engraving by Houbraken comes from Birch's The Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain, published at London in 1747
