Step inside the magnificent Duomo, also known as St. Lawrence Cathedral, in Genoa and prepare to be awestruck by its stunning abside. As you gaze upon the apse, your eyes are immediately drawn to the intricate wood intarsia by Giovanni Francesco Zambelli from the 16th century. The South side of the abside features a haunting depiction of "The Massacre of Innocents, " leaving a lasting impression on all who behold it. Moving towards the apsidal arch, you are greeted by breathtaking Byzantine school mosaics with golden backgrounds. The Prophet Samuel stands tall, followed by King Solomon and King David - each mosaic exuding an air of regality and divine presence. Prophet Elijah completes this heavenly quartet, their collective beauty captivating visitors for centuries. But perhaps the most iconic sight within this sacred space is none other than Christ Pantocrator himself. Executed between the twelfth and mid-thirteenth century by skilled local and Venetian workers, these Byzantine mosaics adorn the apse walls with unparalleled grandeur. As you explore further into this spiritual sanctuary, frescoes come alive before your very eyes. Angels grace us with their ethereal presence in exquisite detail during Mary's Coronation in 1468-69. Their delicate brushstrokes bring forth a sense of celestial harmony that transcends time itself. Saints join them in this heavenly celebration while Virgin Mary herself basks in divine radiance alongside God Almighty – a testament to her elevated status among mortals. In every corner of this abside lies a masterpiece waiting to be discovered; each stroke of paint or tesserae meticulously placed to create an atmosphere steeped in faith and artistic brilliance.
