EDITORS COMMENTS

Alexander von is a name that echoes through history, encompassing various individuals who have left their mark on the world. From explorers to naturalists, this name carries with it tales of adventure and discovery. In 1914, during the Second Phase of the Great Retreat, an unknown creator captured a moment in time. The image portrays a scene filled with tension and uncertainty, reflecting the tumultuous period in which Alexander von lived. But not all moments associated with this name are fraught with conflict. In c1882, Alexander von Wagner painted a vivid picture of a Roman Chariot Race. The energy and excitement leap off the canvas, transporting us back to ancient times when such spectacles were held. Baron Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was another bearer of this illustrious name. A portrait by Julius Schrader immortalizes him as he appeared in 1859 - wise and contemplative. Known as "The Great Naturalist, " Humboldt's contributions to science and exploration continue to inspire generations. Humboldt's expeditions took him far and wide; one photograph from c1820-1839 shows explorers standing at the basalt cliffs at Regla, Mexico - evidence of his thirst for knowledge about our planet's wonders. In 1800-1804 (1900), we see Humboldt again alongside Aime Bonpland on their journey along the Orinoco River. This image captures their spirit of curiosity and determination as they charted new territories. Not limited to naturalists alone, there were other notable figures bearing this distinguished name. General Alexander von Kluck stands tall among World War I officers in an image from 1915 - a reminder that history encompasses both triumphs and tragedies. Throughout these images spanning different eras, one thing remains constant: the legacy left behind by those who bore the name Alexander von continues to captivate our imagination today.
