A biro, also known as a ballpoint pen or rollerball pen, is a type of writing instrument that uses small metal balls to dispense ink onto paper in order to create written marks. The most common design feature of a biro consists of three main parts: the barrel, which houses the internal mechanisms; the nib or tip, where the ink flows out and makes contact with the paper; and the clip, used for attaching it to clothing or other objects. The pen's body is typically made from plastic or metal. The mechanism behind how a biro works involves small rotating balls that are coated in water-based ink within an internal reservoir at one end of the nib tip. When pressure is applied on the paper by moving the writing instrument, these tiny spheres begin rolling down towards their pointy ends and eventually break apart releasing more liquid onto your surface - thus creating lines or marks. Over time they have evolved significantly since they first emerged during World War II as an inexpensive alternative to traditional fountain pens.
