Giovanni Boccaccio, a renowned Italian writer and poet of the 14th century, left behind a rich legacy in various forms of art. In a captivating colour engraving, we see his portrait captured with intricate detail. The lines on his face tell stories of wisdom gained through years of experience. Moving to vellum manuscripts, we encounter Jocasta, Queen of Thebes, depicted in Ms 622 fol. 12 from "Des Hommes Illustres. " This delicate artwork showcases the elegance and power she possessed as a ruler. Another vellum manuscript, Ms 3878, unveils scenes that stir emotions within us - battles fought valiantly and the horrors of hell itself. These illustrations are taken from Boccaccio's work "De Casibus Virorum Illustrium, " reminding us that even great men can fall victim to fate's cruel hand. Intriguingly titled "The Bawdy Women, " Ms Fr 12420 offers glimpses into the lives of women who defied societal norms during Boccaccio's time. On vellum pages filled with vibrant colors, their stories unfold with both audacity and grace. A detailed cassone painting portrays Saladin and Torello of Istria in an epic tale brought to life by tempera on panel technique. Through this masterpiece created by Boccaccio himself (see also 444280-81), we witness love tested against all odds – an enduring theme throughout his works. As we explore further into these cassone panels (also see 444280 & 444282), more chapters unravel before our eyes; each stroke revealing another twist in Saladin and Torello's story (see also 444281-82), and is here that passion intertwines with destiny under Boccaccio's skilled brushwork. Turning our attention back to manuscripts once again: Rosane, in Ms 5193 Fol.
