Gladstone and the Midlothian Campaign

Sketches of four-times Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone on his tour of Midlothian during a US-style campaign which saw the elderly statesman come out of the retirement to take the ultra-Tory seat. Orchestrated by Lord Rosebery, Gladstone undertook a tour of the area which was highly publicised. He travelled on a Pullman train from which he was able to address gathered crowds. Many queued for hours to hear him speak and paid up to 5 a ticket"

General Election Promo postcard for Sydney Hoffnung Goldsmid

The reverse of a promo postcard from January 1910 General Election for Sydney Hoffnung Goldsmid, Conservative candidate for Camberwell North who failed to defeat the incumbent Thomas James Macnamara (Liberal). The card text encourages voters to support the vote for Tariff Reform and quotes Arthur James Balfour, 1st Earl of Balfour (Conservative Leader of the Opposition) stating "The Taxation on the necessities of life shall not be increased." Date: 1910
