The Heritage Listed 2nd Darwin Control Tower And Water Tank At Australian Aviation Heritage Centre, Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia Featured Print

The Heritage Listed 2nd Darwin Control Tower And Water Tank At Australian Aviation Heritage Centre, Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia

This civil Control Tower was constructed under a water reservoir at Darwin's military aerodrome in mid 1950s. The water tank dates from about 1940. A series of water towers was erected around Darwin as part of the scheme to convey Manton's water to the town and this was one such. It survived the Japanese bombing of Darwin from 1942 onward as well as Cyclone Tracy in 1974. It was painted in red and white squares to highlight it as an obstacle. However, in later years it became something of an obstruction, being sited in the middle of the RAAF apron, the structure was dismantled in May 2008. Because of its iconic nature and significance as part of Darwin's development (both as water tank and Control Tower), the structure became heritage listed and transported to be re-erected, somewhat foreshortened, at the Australian Aviation Heritage Centre on the southern boundary of Darwin Airport.'n'n

Winifred Holt and blind soldiers Featured Print

Winifred Holt and blind soldiers

Winifred Holt (1870-1945), US sculptor and welfare worker, teaching blind French officers checkers (draughts). Holt's work with the blind started in around 1901, and she went on to found or co-found the Ticket Bureau for the Blind (1903) and The New York Association for the Blind (1905). She also worked with the blind in other countries, and in 1921 was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. Here, she is working with blind French officers, possibly during or after World War I. The medals displayed by the officer at right are the Legion of Honour and the Croix de Guerre. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries
