"From Housemaid to Coal Heavers: A Journey Through the Coals" In the dimly lit room, a housemaid carries coals, her silhouette casting shadows on the walls. It's a scene reminiscent of an era when coal was king and essential for warmth and daily life. Sending coals to Newcastle may seem like an absurd notion, but it once symbolized surplus in abundance. Pyne's painting captures the laborious work of coal heavers, their muscles straining under heavy loads as they transport this vital resource. The 1960s brought about significant changes with the rise of electricity. Electric men emerged as heroes, connecting homes to power grids and transforming lives. The Electricity Council appliance testing lab in Leatherhead became a hub for innovation and safety standards. Transporting coal had its own history; Bernot wagons were once synonymous with coal delivery in 1880 Paris. This digitally restored reproduction showcases how inhabitants relied on these deliveries during that historic period. Across continents, even today, places like Whitman's Blacksmith Shop Restaurant stand as reminders of our dependence on coal. They serve as nostalgic havens where stories are shared over hearty meals cooked using traditional methods fueled by this black gold. Yet not all tales surrounding they can pleasant ones - "The Strike in South Wales" depicts a time of hardship and scarcity known as the Coal Famine at Merthyr.
