The Department of Defense: A Legacy of Service and Innovation From its humble beginnings to its current status as a pillar of national security, the Department of Defense has played an integral role in shaping American history. This captivating collection of images offers a glimpse into the department's rich heritage and ongoing commitment to safeguarding our nation. In 1922, a poignant black-and-white photograph captures a woman kneeling at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. Her solemn reverence reflects the deep respect we hold for those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom. Fast forward to 1938, where another monochromatic image showcases the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier standing tall amidst Virginia's Arlington National Cemetery. This hallowed ground serves as a powerful reminder that heroes are not forgotten but forever honored. Venturing beyond these sacred grounds, an engraving from Washington depicts the interior of the United States Naval Observatory during the 19th century, and is within these walls that scientific advancements were made, contributing to our understanding and mastery over celestial navigation. A symbol synonymous with military might and strategic planning emerges next – The Pentagon. Since becoming headquarters for the Department of Defense in 1943, this iconic structure has been at center stage for countless historic decisions that shape global affairs. Presidents have stood shoulder-to-shoulder with key figures within this department throughout history. In one snapshot from c1970s, President Barack Obama stands alongside Special Presidential Envoy Brett while discussing matters related to countering ISIL. Another image features President Obama engaged in conversation with Chairman Joseph Dunford and U. S officials – exemplifying leadership collaboration at its finest. Moving beyond political realms, Secretary Carlos Del Toro examines a cutting-edge gadget created through 3-D printing technology during his visit to CHERRY POINT, N. C. , showcasing how innovation plays an essential role within defense operations today.
