Sir Sam Fay by Lieut. Percival Anderson

Sir Samuel (Sam) Fay (1856-1953), railway administrator. General Manager of first the Midland and South Western Junction Railways and then in 1902, the Grand Central Railway as well as responsible for the development of Immingham Dock. As editor of several rail magazines, he pioneered the use of publicity for the railways. He was director of movements at the War Office from January 1917 to March 1918, then director-general of movements and railways, and a member of the army council, with the rank of general. He gives a lively account of his wartime career in his book The War Office at War (1937). In 1919 he returned to the Great Central Railway, remaining its general manager until it became part of the London and North Eastern Railway on 1 January 1923. Date: 1918

Luigi Groto, Italian poet

Luigi Groto (1541-1585), Italian poet. The circular Italian inscription gives his name, calls him the blind man of Hadria (referring to Adria, northern Italy), and states that here he is 31 years of age. Groto studied philosophy and literature despite losing his sight soon after birth. He lived and worked in Venice, where he published several works of poetry and plays. Groto also worked as an editor on books by the 16th-century Italian aristocrat Giovanni Maria Bonardo. Midnight Dress Parade Party

A Midnight Dress Parade party, a new society amusement in 1933. The group admiring a mannequin modelling a white evening dress include a number of important figures in the world of fashion and design: Mrs (Diana) Vreeland, Mr Walter Payne, Mme. Florence de Pena, Lord Howard of Effingham, Mrs Charles Graves, Mrs Madge Garland, Mr Derek Patmore and Mr Leon de Lion. Date: 1933
