Marconi with his radio, 19th century

Marconi with his radio, 19th-century artwork. The apparatus consists of a receiver and a transmitter. Italian physicist Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937) patented his radio system in Britain and established the Marconi's Wireless Telegraph Company in London in 1897. In 1899 he made the first transmission across the English Channel and, in 1901, the first trans-Atlantic transmission. In 1909 he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. He later developed short-wave radio and established a global radio telegraph network. Artwork from the 20th volume (second period of 1897) of the French popular science weekly La Science Illustree

Optical computing Featured Image

Optical computing

Optical computing. Coloured light micrograph of a section through a hybrid electronic-optical circuit board. Optical waveguides (red) are used to transmit data in the form of light pulses. This allows data transfer at faster speeds than is possible through the electronic connections of an ordinary printed circuit board (PCB). Such an increase in data transfer speeds is required to take full advantage of the processing power of the fastest microchips, the calculating components at the heart of a computer. The optical waveguides are 0.001-millimetre-wide plastic strips. This technology has been developed by Siemens and the University of Paderborn, Germany

Demonstration of the wireless telephone Featured Image

Demonstration of the wireless telephone

Demonstration of the wireless telephone, June 1920. In the 1920s, broadcasting was still in its infancy, with radio transmitters and receivers owned only by amateur enthusiasts. To demonstrate the potential and efficiency of the wireless telephone as a means of broadcasting, Dame Nellie Melba, the Australian soprano shown here, gave a concert of operatic arias that was transmitted across Europe from Essex, England. People gathered at receiving stations were impressed by the clarity of tone. This portrait is from the Bain News Service, one of America's oldest news picture agencies, which holds images dating from the 1890s to the 1930s
