The majestic fin backed whale, scientifically known as Balaenoptera physalus, is a sight to behold. With its sleek body and distinct dorsal fin, this magnificent creature never fails to captivate our hearts. One breathtaking encounter took place near the surface of the azure waters surrounding Pico Island in the Azores, Portugal during the month of May. The fin whale gracefully emerged from the depths, showcasing its immense size and power. From an aerial perspective, another awe-inspiring moment unfolded as a lunge-feeding fin whale opened its massive mouth wide. Its throat pouch distended as it engulfed vast amounts of water and prey in one swift motion. This incredible display of feeding prowess left us in complete awe. In Spain's Barcelona coast, we witnessed a remarkable scene where a curious fin whale appeared just below the surface. In front of its mouth floated a delicate ctenophore - nature's own ballet unfolding before our eyes. Venturing across continents to Mexico's Baja California region brought us face-to-face with not one but two feeding fin whales. From above, their synchronized movements were mesmerizing as they lunged towards their next meal with precision and grace. Back in the southern Sea of Cortez, more aerial views revealed multiple fin whales engaging in lunge-feeding behavior once again. Their powerful bodies propelled them through the water effortlessly while they satisfied their insatiable hunger for sustenance. Not limited to warm waters alone, these magnificent creatures also graced colder regions such as Canada's Bay of Fundy. Against a backdrop of towering mountains, a surfacing fin whale reminded us that beauty can be found even amidst rugged landscapes. Returning to Europe's icy wonderland at Liefdefjorden showcased yet another stunning image: a surfacing fin whale framed by dramatic mountain scenery. It served as a reminder that these gentle giants are adaptable beings capable of thriving in diverse environments.
