James Braidwood, Superintendent, LFEE
James Braidwood (18001861), founder of the world's first municipal fire service in Edinburgh in 1824. He was the first director of what was to become the London Fire Brigade, the London Fire Engine Establishment. He is credited with the development of the modern municipal fire service. Date: 1833

Captain Sir Eyre Massey Shaw (1828-1908), Superintendent of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (now London Fire Brigade) and its predecessor, the London Fire Engine Establishment, from 1861 to 1891. He introduced modern firefighting methods, and increased the number of stations. The medals he is wearing are (right) MFB Good Service Medal, received 1887, and (left) Knight Commander Order of the Bath, received 1891. Date: circa 1890s
