Centerpiece or sugar sculpture personifying the triumph of Catholicism in England, Raggvaglio della solenne comparsa, fatta in Roma gli otto di gennaio MDCLXXXVII. dall'illvstrissimo, et eccellentissimo signor conte di Castelmaine ambasciadore straordinario della Sagra Real Maesta di Giacomo Secondo re d'Inghilterra, Scozia, Francia, et Ibernia, difensore della fede alla Santa Sede Apostolica, in andare pvblicamente all'vdienza della Santita di Nostro Signore Papa Innocenzo Vndecimo, Lenardi, Giovanni Battista, 1656-1704, Westerhout, Arnold van, 1651-1725, Wright, John Michael, ca. 1617-ca. 1694, Etching, 1687?, The table sculpture was designed for the banquet given by British Ambassador Roger Palmer on January 14, 1687, at the Palazzo Pamphilj on Piazza Navona in Rome. An legorical composition glorifying the return of England to the world of catholicism, it represents the Church seated on a sun, accompanied by Truth and discovered by Time. The Valour of the King, shown as a warrior, chases away Discord and Fraud. At bottom, the hydra of Rebellion is decapitated, while at top are the arms of England and of the Pope. 10--inscribed upper right, Gio. Batta. Lenardi delin.--inscribed lower left.
