Shotley Bridge General Hospital, County Durham

Aerial view of Shotley Bridge Hospital, County Durham. It was originally opened by the Gateshead Union in 1912 as a TB sanatorium (far right of picture), with accommodation for elderly and infirm workhouse inmates added later (upper half of picture). The site later became a "mental defectives colony". During World War Two, Emergency Medical Scheme wards were erected (lower part of picture)

Ladywell Lodge, Lewisham, south east London

Aerial view of Ladywell Lodge, a residential institution for the elderly, near Lewisham, in south east London. The site was formerly St Olave's Union workhouse, designed by Newman & Newman, opened in 1900 to house the aged and infirm. During the First World War, it became Bermondsey Military Hospital and was later known as Bermondsey Institution

Norfolk County Lunatic Asylum, Thorpe, Norfolk

The Norfolk County Lunatic Asylum was established in 1814 at Thorpe near Norwich. This view, from the early 1900s, shows what was then the most recent addition to the buildings. The site was used as a military hospital during the First World War. It subsequently became known as Norfolk Mental Hospital and then St Andrew's Hospital
