2646921 The Battle of Oriskany in 1777, c.1930 (colour litho) by Yohn, Frederick Coffay (1875-1933) (after); Private Collection; (add.info.: The Battle of Oriskany, fought on August 6, 1777, was one of the bloodiest battles in the North American theater of the American Revolutionary War and a significant engagement of the Saratoga campaign. An American party trying to relieve the siege of Fort Stanwix was ambushed by a party of Loyalists and allies of several Native American tribes. This was one of the few battles in the war in which almost all of the participants were North American: Loyalists and allied Indians fought against Patriots and allied Oneida in the absence of British soldiers.); Peter Newark Pictures; American, out of copyright

3244759 Admiral Nelson Receiving the Spanish Admiral's Sword, Battle of St. Vincent (coloured engraving) by Orme, Daniel (1766-p.1832) (after); National Museum of the Royal Navy, Portsmouth, Hampshire, UK; (add.info.: Colour engraving of the oil painting by Daniel Orme depicting Admiral Nelson receiving the Spanish Admiral's sword on board the San Josef after the Battle of St. Vincent on the 14th February 1797. Nelson is standing centre right of the picture, his right hand held out to receive the sword of the Captain of the ship. He is depicted offering it on bended knee whilst his left hand points to the slumped figure of the Spanish Admiral who has been mortally wounded. Behind them is a Spanish priest holding his cross aloft in his left hand. Between him and Nelson are three British officers and to the right is Captain Berry gesturing towards the San Josef's ensign which has just been hauled down. The man waving his hat on the poop behind is William Fearney, Nelson's bargeman. In the left background are other ships including the San Nicolas which has a Union flag over her ensign.); A© National Museum of the Royal Navy; English, out of copyright

To Hell With Surrender! How Second Lieutenant J. C. Buchan
The official narrative for this drawing reads: When he saw the enemy had practically surrounded his command, he collected his platoon and prepared to fight his way back to the supporting line. At this point the enemy, who had crept round his right flank, rushed towards him, shouting out Surrender! To hell with surrender! he replied, and, shooting the foremost of the enemy, he finally repelled this advance with his platoon. He then fought his way back to the supporting line of the forward position, where he held out till dusk. At dusk he fell back as ordered, but inspite of his injuries again refused to go to the aid post, saying his place was beside his men. Date: 22nd June 1918
