Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen was a Netherlandish artist who lived from around 1500 to 1559. He is known for his various works, including "The Holy Family" painted between 1528 and 1530, and "Girl with a Cat" created in 1546. His talent extended beyond paintings as he also produced etchings and engravings like "Aqueduct at Segovia and The Castle of Madrid, " which dates back to the late 16th century. Vermeyen's art often featured prominent figures of his time, such as Mary, Queen of Hungary, whose portrait he painted in the mid-16th century. Another intriguing piece attributed to him is the mysterious "Portrait of a Man with a Rosary, " where the creator remains unknown. One notable subject that Vermeyen frequently depicted was Charles V, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire during the early-mid 16th century. In fact, there exists an artwork in the Rijksmuseum that imitates Vermeyen's style portraying Charles V when he was still King of Spain. Apart from portraits and religious scenes like "Holy Family, " Vermeyen also delved into other genres. One example is his etching titled "Girl with Cat" from 1545—a charming portrayal capturing both innocence and companionship. Throughout his career, Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen showcased his versatility through drawings, prints, engravings while exploring different themes ranging from women veiled by their own mystery to architectural wonders like the Aqueduct at Segovia combined with The Castle of Madrid.
