John Gerrard Keulemans was a talented Dutch artist known for his stunning illustrations of various bird species. His attention to detail and artistic skill brought these birds to life on paper, capturing their beauty and uniqueness. One of the magnificent creatures he depicted was the Strigops habroptilus, commonly known as the kakapo. With its moss-green feathers and large beak, this flightless parrot stood out among its avian counterparts. Keulemans' portrayal showcased the kakapo's distinct features with precision and artistry. Another bird that caught Keulemans' eye was the Tui, both in its young and adult forms. The Tui's glossy plumage and melodious song made it a favorite subject for many artists, including Keulemans. He captured their vibrant colors and intricate patterns flawlessly. Keulemans also explored variations within species, such as the Melanistic varietal of the New Zealand Fantail depicted on his left-hand side. This unique coloration added an element of intrigue to an already captivating bird. The Huia, a now-extinct species endemic to New Zealand, also found its way into Keulemans' portfolio. He portrayed both male and female Huia birds with accuracy, showcasing their distinctive curved beaks which were used for probing tree bark in search of insects. Cyanoramphus parakeets were another group that fascinated Keulemans; he illustrated various members from this family with great attention to detail. Their vibrant plumage came alive under his skilled hand. The New Zealand Pigeon Kereru was yet another subject that graced Keulemans' canvas. These large pigeons displayed beautiful iridescent feathers that shimmered in different hues when hit by sunlight - a challenge that he embraced wholeheartedly. Kea birds also captured Keuleman's imagination due to their intelligence and mischievous nature.
