In the year 1905, a British narrowboat was discovered by the sealer Ariebis. This derelict sailing vessel held a haunting sight - the captain, lashed to the helm, had frozen to death. The chilling scene served as a reminder of the treacherous journey Vikings once undertook when they sailed to England. As history unfolded, tales of resilience and tragedy continued to be woven into our collective memory. In 1860, an influential book titled "The Persuasive Eloquence of the Sunny South" was published by King & Baird. Its wood engraving with letterpress depicted scenes that aimed to sway opinions on various matters. One such matter was abolitionism, which gained momentum during this time period. A powerful wood engraving called "Abolitionist Cachet" emerged in response to African slavery in 1813. The coloured steel engraving titled "African Slavery, " created by Clark & Dubourg, further shed light on this dark chapter in human history. Artistic depictions have always possessed the ability to evoke strong emotions within us all. A colour lithograph captured a moment where fury consumed individuals who rose together as one against an unknown oppressor: "The inmates rose as one man and lashed themselves into a truly terrible state of fury. " Yet amidst turmoil and despair, there is sometimes solace found in compassion from unexpected sources. In all the world's cruelty and indifference towards suffering souls, only one person extended pity towards another. Another tale etched into history is that of Elizabeth Mouat aboard The Castaway Smack Columbine - she found herself lashed tightly to its deck for survival. Engraved for eternity, her story serves as a symbol of endurance against nature's wrath. Religious narratives also depict instances where individuals were metaphorically or physically bound against their wills; such is seen in "The Betrayal of Christ.
