Battle of Abu Klea, 17 January 1885

Battle of Abu Klea, 17 January 1885. Oil on canvas signed and dated lower left: W B Wollen 1896, by William Barns Wollen (1857-1936), 1896. In a race against time to relieve General Gordon, besieged at Khartoum, a relief column under General Sir Garnet Wolseley set out from Cairo in October 1884. Realising that his infantry, travelling in boats up the Nile, might not reach Khartoum in time to save Gordon, Wolseley detached a Desert Column to travel overland by a faster but more dangerous route. On 17 Jan 1885 this Column, commanded by General Herbert Stewart, was attacked by the Mahdists at Abu Klea. The resulting battle was later described by Winston Churchill as the most savage and bloody action ever fought in the Soudan by British troops'. The British square broke and was closed only after desperate hand-to-hand fighting. The British suffered 168 casualties, the Mahdists about 1100. The Column finally reached Khartoum on 28 January, two days after the town had fallen. Date: 1885

Suffragette Womens March 1912 Featured Print

Suffragette Womens March 1912

In October 1912, six women left Edinburgh to walk 400 miles to London, gathering signatures en route in support of Women's Suffrage. The march was organised by Mrs. De Fonblanque (sister of Maud Arncliffe-Sennettt). The marchers wore a coat and skirt in russett brown with a matching hat, and earned for the marchers the name of the Brown Women'. The route lay along the Great North Road and the women covered a distance of about 15 miles a day. They carried a banner designed by Louise R Jacobs for the Suffrage Atelier. The march ended in London on November 16th 1912. Photo shows a stop made, possibly in Doncaster. Date: 1912

Tank Battle in Villers Bocage, France 1944

Illustration showing a battle between German Tiger tanks and British tanks and infantry in the village of Villers Bocage, Normandy, June 1944. A British tank (on left), which might be a Cromwell or Sherman, is shown knocking out one German Tiger (centre) by shooting through a hole in the corner house. Another Tiger tank (right) is coming under fire from British machine guns and PIAT's, some of whom can be seen extreme right. This illustration was drawn by Captain Bryan de Grineau, the Illustrated London New's artist, from a description given to him by an eye-witness, Mr. Tom Treanor of the Los Angeles Times'. Date: 1944
