Steve Bloomer, English footballer and manager
Steve Bloomer (1874-1938), English footballer and manager. He played for Derby County, Middlesbrough and England during the 1890s and 1900s, and was famous for his prolific scoring of goals. He remains a legend at Derby County, the Club anthem is entitled Steve Bloomer's Watching, and a portrait bust of him was unveiled at the Pride Park ground in 2009. Date: early 20th century

Sir Samuel (Sam) Fay (1856-1953), railway administrator. General Manager of first the Midland and South Western Junction Railways and then in 1902, the Grand Central Railway as well as responsible for the development of Immingham Dock. As editor of several rail magazines, he pioneered the use of publicity for the railways. He was director of movements at the War Office from January 1917 to March 1918, then director-general of movements and railways, and a member of the army council, with the rank of general. He gives a lively account of his wartime career in his book The War Office at War (1937). In 1919 he returned to the Great Central Railway, remaining its general manager until it became part of the London and North Eastern Railway on 1 January 1923. Date: 1918

Letter from Hardacre J. Pitt. An important touring manager in the decades around 1900, he used his notepaper to advertise his repertoire. This letter from the Comedy Theatre, Manchester, is dated 10th December 1891. Of the plays illustrated, East Lynne and The Shaughraun date from the 1860s. Current Cash by C. A. Clarke was from 1886, and Old London by Arthur Shirley had been first produced as recently as 25th July 1891. Date: 1891
