James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879). Caricature of the Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell. Maxwell's works cover a wide area of science, and he is regarded as one of the finest minds of the 19th century. His major work was on light and electromagnetic waves. He showed that oscillating charges produced waves in an electromagnetic field, and that these waves had the same velocity as light. This led him to predict other forms of electromagnetic radiation, such as radio waves. His equations introduced the value c for the speed of light. He also worked on the motions of molecules in a gas, and showed that Saturn's rings must be composed of numerous particles

HIV reverse transcription enzyme. Molecular models of the reverse transcriptase enzyme found in HIV (the human immunodeficiency virus). The foreground model shows the helices and arrowed sheets representing the enzyme's shape (secondary structure). The background model shows the 7844 atoms (spheres) of the molecular structure. Reverse transcriptase is an enzyme that is a key part of the process of producing DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) from the instructions contained in a strand of RNA (ribonucleic acid). Many viruses, including HIV, consist of a core of RNA, and this reverse transcription is how HIV infects human cells. This enzyme is from the HIV-1 form of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome)

Januvia diabetes drug, molecular model. Januvia (sitagliptin) is a hypoglycaemic drug, one that reduces blood sugar levels. Diabetes is a condition in which blood sugar levels can get dangerously high due to a lack of insulin, the hormone that reduces them. Januvia works by inhibiting the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP- 4). DPP-4 rapidly deactivates the incretin hormone GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1), which promotes insulin release. Hence, inhibiting DPP-4 prolongs the effects of GLP-1, keeping insulin levels high. Atoms are colour-coded: carbon (grey), hydrogen (yellow), oxygen (red), nitrogen (blue) and fluorine (green). Januvia is marketed by Merck, and was approved in the USA in October 2006
