As they traversed through the Forest of Nieppe, remnants of an ammunition lorry stood as haunting reminders of the destructive power unleashed during this tumultuous time. In April 1918, on Le Pont de Nieppe in Armentieres, chaos reigned supreme. The once peaceful bridge became a battleground where soldiers fought valiantly for their countries. The destruction was evident all around; even the old district railway station in Bailleul lay in ruins. Amidst these scenes of devastation and loss, personal belongings held sentimental value to those who served. A hinged brass tobacco tin from the East Yorkshire Regiment symbolized camaraderie shared between brothers-in-arms. A finely hand-carved curved stem pipe provided solace amidst chaos - a reminder that even in war's darkest moments, artistry and craftsmanship could still flourish.
