A Garden Guide - Extracting a Weed from a Lawn
Illustration by William Heath Robinson (1872-1944) showing a typically convoluted method of weeding a garden lawn. A man is hosted by ropes supported by a teepee configuration of poles worked by onlookers. He holds a corkscrew type instrument in his hand, in order to extract a single weed. Robinson was a regular contributor to the Sketch, the Bystander and other ILN titles during his lifetime. His weekly drawings featuring mind-boggling contraptions and designs were immensely popular. The Girl who ordered a glass of milk at the Cafe Royal
Illustration by H. M. Bateman showing a blushing young woman regretting her decision to order a glass of milk in London's fashionable Cafe Royal because of the laughter and ridicule the request has generated, including that of her waiter. Bateman (1887-1970) was a popular artist and regularly contributed to the Sketch, the Tatler and the Bystander. His efficient, bold style depicting social faux-pas was ground breaking for its time and his work is a brilliant reflection of the period

Engraving of a trial of various anchor designs, held at the Royal Dockyard Sheerness, from the Illustrated London News, 17th July 1852. This trial was held in the presence of mercantile shipowners and an Admiralty committee, in order to test the holding power of a number of anchors. These included the New Admiralty, Aylen's, Rodger's, Mitcheson's, Honibal's, Isaac's, Lenox's and Trotman's improved Porter anchor. Trotman's anchor was declared the winner
