After the conference in Moscow with British, French, and Soviet counterparts in March-April 1947, US Secretary of State George C. Marshall had observed the growing economic collapse of Europe and the obvious intent of Soviet Russia to benefit from that collapse. He had returned to Washington thinking that the best way to avoid this was to prevent Europe's economic, social, and political deterioration by creating a European program with massive assistance from the United States. One year later, in April 1948, President Truman, a Democratic president, signed the Foreign Assistance Act, passed by a Republican controlled Congress, to establish what became known as the Marshall Plan. / AFP PHOTO / RENE HELIER

Des passants lisent des affiches proclamant "la patrie en danger" Paris la suite des meutes du 6 fvrier 1934. Ce mouvement faisait suite au scandale de l'affaire Stavisky, une vaste affaire d'escroquerie pour laquelle les dirigeants des ligues des Croix de feu et les associations d'anciens combattants avaient dcid d'organiser une manifestation le jour mme o Edouard Daladier devait faire sa dclaration ministrielle devant la Chambre. Aux cris de "A bas les voleurs", les manifestants se regrouprent place de la Concorde. Le service d'ordre, dbord et laiss sans directives par le prfet de police, tira sur la foule, faisant une vingtaine de morts et une centaine de blesss. Cette manifestation sera suivie le 12 fvrier par un rassemblement unitaire communiste et socialiste organis pour dnoncer la menace fasciste et considr comme prcurseur du Front populaire de juin 1936.
