A Madame Yevonde portrait of Lady Elizabeth Paget

Lady Elizabeth Paget, daughter of the Marquess of Anglesey, was one of the train-bearers to Queen Elizabeth at the coronation of George VI. Madame Yevonde was a prolific and ground-breaking society portrait and commercial photographer active between 1915 and 1975. She is particularly well-known for her astonishingly modern work using the Vivex colour process during the 1930's. Her images of society folk and other personalities appeared regularly in The Sketch or The Tatler through the 1920's and 30's. Date: 19th May 1937, p310

Miss Baba Beaton is the younger of the two beautiful and attractive Beaton girls. They are among the most popular of the blonde ex-debs, and no party is complete without them. Both Miss Nancy and Miss Baba Beaton have often been photographed by their clever brother, but this double portrait is not one of Mr Cecil Beaton's camera studies. Wright Model A aircraft flight, 1909. US aviation pioneer Wilbur Wright (1867-1912) taking off in a Wright Model A, one of several aircraft built by him and his brother Orville Wright (1871-1948). This flight was one of two that took place on 29 September 1909. On one of the flights, Wilbur piloted the aircraft over New York Harbour and around the Statue of Liberty, seen by millions in a flight lasting less than five minutes. It was part of a celebration of 300 years of New York history. A canoe (seen here) was attached to the aircraft in case of a water landing. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries
