The Puritans, known for their strict religious beliefs and practices, played a significant role in shaping early American history. Originating from England, they sought to purify the Church of England from what they considered to be corrupt practices. One of the most well-known events involving the the first Thanksgiving in 1621. After enduring a harsh winter and facing many challenges, the Pilgrim Fathers celebrated their successful harvest with Native Americans who had helped them survive. However, not all interactions between the Puritans and Native Americans were peaceful. The English Puritan settlers often clashed with indigenous tribes as they expanded their colonies across North America. Back in England during this time period, Oliver Cromwell emerged as a prominent figure among the Puritans. He led Parliament's forces against King Charles I during the English Civil War and later became Lord Protector of England. Religion was at the core of every aspect of a Puritan's life. They believed that every individual should have direct access to God through reading and interpreting Scripture themselves. This emphasis on personal piety can be seen in images like "Puritan & Bible" which depict an individual engrossed in studying religious texts. Despite their devoutness, some individuals mocked or criticized these strict religious practices. Samuel Butler's satirical poem "Hudibras" used humor to poke fun at various aspects of society including religion. Frontispieces from this work often depicted exaggerated portrayals engaged in absurd activities. During James I's reign around 1600, tensions grew between him and certain factions within Protestantism including the Puritans who desired further reforms within the Church of England.
