EDITORS COMMENTS

The rock lizard, also known as the common wall lizard or Podarcis muralis, is a small to medium-sized species of lizard that belongs to the family Lacertidae, and is native to Europe and North Africa but has been introduced to other parts of the world including Australia and New Zealand. These lizards are typically brown or gray in color with darker markings on their backs and lighter shades on their bellies. They have a distinctive pattern of spots or stripes which can vary depending on the region they inhabit and can grow up to 20-25 centimeters in length, including their tail, which makes up about half of their total body length, and are primarily ground-dwelling animals that prefer rocky outcrops, walls, and buildings for shelter, and are excellent climbers and often bask in sunny spots during the day before retreating into crevices at night for protection from predators. Their diet consists mainly of insects such as flies, beetles, ants, and grasshoppers. They also consume smaller amounts of leaves, fruits, and flowers. In some cases, rock lizards may eat small vertebrates like snails or even tiny birds if given the opportunity. During mating season male rock lizards engage in territorial displays where they perform push-ups against each other while vying for dominance over potential mates. Females lay eggs which incubate for approximately 40-50 days before hatching into young ones that resemble miniature versions of adult rock lizards.
