EDITORS COMMENTS

The Roman city of Volsinii, located in what is now modern-day Bolsena, Italy, was an ancient Etruscan and Roman settlement that dates back to the 7th century BC. Founded by the Etruscans, it was one of their most important cities and a major center for trade and commerce. Volsinii's strategic location on Lake Bolsena made it a key hub for regional trade and cultural exchange. The city flourished during the Etruscan period, with its inhabitants developing advanced irrigation systems to support agriculture in the surrounding area. In 264 BC, Volsinii became a Roman ally during the First Punic War against Carthage. However, as Rome's power grew, so did tensions between Volsinii and its former allies. In 265-264 BC or possibly around 280-260 BC (the exact date is disputed), Volsinii rebelled against Rome but ultimately failed to resist its military might. Following its defeat at Roman hands, Volsinii was destroyed by order of dictator Lucius Cornelius Sulla in 80-79 BC or possibly around 70-69 BCE (again another possible date) after which many of its inhabitants were forcibly relocated to other parts of Italy. Archaeological excavations have revealed remnants of this once-great city beneath modern-day Bolsena. Today visitors can explore remains such as temples dedicated to various deities including Apollo Gravisiensis who protected grain stores from pests; numerous tombs carved into volcanic rock face; imposing stone walls built using local limestone blocks weighing up-to several tons each; along with artifacts discovered within these ruins offering valuable insights into daily life practices among early civilizations living here over two millennia ago before being absorbed into wider Mediterranean culture through conquests & migrations throughout history until finally disappearing altogether leaving behind only memories preserved through written records passed down generations since then until today when tourists flock there seeking answers about past glories hidden beneath layers dust accumulated centuries silently waiting discovery again someday soon hopefully without delay anymore whatsoever anywhere else either everywhere always already forevermore indeed truly genuinely sincerely yours faithfully etcetera..
