Saint James the Greater, also known as Saint James Major, was a prominent figure in Christian history. Born around 1315/1320, he was one of the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus Christ himself. Throughout centuries, numerous artists have depicted his life and martyrdom in their works. Simone Martini's painting from the early 14th century captures the essence with its intricate details and vibrant colors. The artist beautifully portrays his saintly aura and devotion to spreading the teachings of Christ. In Pieter van der Heyden's artwork titled "St. James and the Magician Hermogenes, " we witness an intriguing encounter between Saint James and a magician. This depiction showcases not only his unwavering faith but also his ability to confront evil forces with divine power. An ancient plaque dating back to 1160/80 depicts Saints James and John the Evangelist side by side. Created by an unknown artist from Meuse, this piece highlights their importance within Christianity during that era. Moving forward in time, we come across an Apostle Spoon featuring St. James the Greater created in London around 1599/1600. Although its creator remains anonymous, this spoon serves as a testament to how widely recognized and revered Saint James was across different cultures. Israhel van Meckenem's Triptych of the Crucifixion is another remarkable portrayal of Saint James alongside other saints like Anthony, Christopher, and George. This triptych exemplifies how deeply intertwined these figures were within religious narratives during medieval times. Jacques Callot's etching published in 1631 presents us with yet another interpretation of Saint James' image—a powerful representation that exudes strength and determination despite facing persecution for his beliefs. The Martyrdom depicted by Jacques Callot shows us a tragic scene where our saint meets his untimely demise due to persecution against Christians at that time.
