Leopold of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was a German prince and the fourth son of Prince Albert, Duke of Edinburgh, and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. Born on April 7, 1853, in London, England, he was a member of the British royal family through his father's marriage to Queen Victoria's eldest daughter. As a young man, Leopold received an excellent education at home under the supervision of his parents. He studied languages including English French German Italian Spanish Russian Dutch Swedish Danish Norwegian Greek Latin Arabic Turkish Hebrew and mathematics among other subjects. In 1871 Leopold joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman serving on HMS Trafalgar during its circumnavigation voyage around the world from 1870-1872 then later transferred to HMS Inconstant which took part in several naval operations including suppressing piracy off Zanzibar in East Africa. After leaving active service Leopold went on to pursue various interests including horse racing yachting hunting shooting photography and collecting rare books. He also became involved with charitable organizations such as St John Ambulance Brigade where he held various administrative positions throughout his life. On June 24 1884 Leopold married Princess Helena Frederica Augusta zu Waldeck und Pyrmont but they had no children together however she died shortly after childbirth due complications following birth that led her death soon after their wedding day Later that same year (1884) he married again this time marrying Princess Anna de Hohenlohe-Langenburg who gave him two daughters one named Feodora Alexandra Olga Marie (1890–1972) whom would go down history for being born deaf-blind
