Look at it from Both Sides - One the one hand employment, on the other - moneu to spend. - Buy British and be self-supporting. Part of a government campaign to tackle a balance of payments crisis, reinforced by a speech by the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII), promoting the importance of buying from British farms and factories to reduce unemployment and boost the national economy, with the second choice being to buy from the British Empire.

Mission to Seamen Chaplain distributing Papers, 1906

Photograph showing a Mission to Seamen Chaplain distributing papers and magazines to a merchant ship crew, on their vessel, 1906. Mission boats were at work in many of the world's largest ports, at this time. They visited ships to hold church services and distribute gifts. There were also Seaman's Institutes in many ports, where visiting merchant sailors could spend evenings playing games, listening to music or just relaxing in sober, upstanding surroundings
