French Grand Prix of 1921

The first road race to be won by an engine powered by a straight-eiggt engine was the French Grand Prix of 1921 in which J Murphy averaged 78.1 mph for 322 miles at Le Mans. The car was a Duesenberg with a 3 litre engine giving 115 hp. The driver in this photograph is Joe Boyer Date: 1921

Bab Sharqi (Gate of the Sun) in Damascus, Syria

Bab Sharqi (meaning Eastern Gate, also known as the Gate of the Sun) in Damascus, Syria. Being one of the seven ancient city gates it allows entrance into the Old City of Damascus and stands over the biblical Street Called Straight (Straight Street). It also is the only original Roman gate still standing. Date: circa 1910
