In the depths of a deciduous forest, gnarled trees stand tall, their branches overgrown with moss and lichen, and is a place where nature itself seems to sulk, as if exhausted from the weight it carries. A weary footman trudges along, his steps heavy with fatigue. His tired eyes reflect the burden he bears in serving others, silently sulking under his breath. In an oil painting titled "The Marriage of Convenience, " painted in 1883, two figures stand side by side but seem distant and detached. Their forced union appears to be nothing more than a facade, leaving them both sulking in their own thoughts. Another artwork called "Off, " created in 1899 on panel captures a neglected scene. The abandoned surroundings evoke feelings of desolation and abandonment - a place where sorrowful souls may find solace in sulking. Amidst the wintry landscape covered in snow stands a giant panda, its head portrait revealing vulnerability beneath its furry exterior. Covered in snowflakes like tears frozen on its face, this captive creature seems to sulk for freedom beyond its confines. A common frog's portrait taken during winter portrays melancholy against the backdrop of Cornwall's frosty beauty. Its expression hints at longing or perhaps even sulking over warmer days gone by. A blonde boy pouts defiantly as he sticks out his lower lip ready to cry; his sulking demeanor reveals dissatisfaction or disappointment that has overcome him. Friends gather at Pie Town Fair captured through Russell Lee's lens back in 1940; however, one figure stands apart from the jovial crowd - an individual seemingly lost within themselves while they sulk amidst all the merriment surrounding them. An oil painting from 1884 depicts a nude woman who exudes an air of sadness and introspection; her posture suggests she is deep within her thoughts while she quietly sulks away from prying eyes.
