Petra is a historical and archaeological city in Jordan that is famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. Another name for Petra is the Rose City. Yarn twisting Featured Print

Yarn twisting

Yarn twisting. Yarn is a general term for a long continuous bundle of fibres. Here, fibres are being spun together to produce yarn. Yarn is then used to construct a fabric, in this case a carpet, as opposed to thread, which is used to join pieces of fabric together. This is the Brest Carpets company in Brest, Belarus. It is the major producer of carpets in Belarus. Photographed on 27 September 2005.

Coloured SEM of the weave of linen Featured Print

Coloured SEM of the weave of linen

Linen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of the weave of a piece of linen. Linen is made from the fibres of the stem of the flax plant Linum usitatissimum, the seeds of which yield linseed oil. For fibre production the plants are sown close together to produce a tall, erect stand. Harvesting is followed by a process called retting, in which the stems are steeped in water for a period of time. During the steeping bacterial action dissolves the soft, fleshy parts, leaving the tough, thickened cell walls of the fibrous tissue. This is mechanically beaten & combed to produce a pure cellulose fibre material. Magnification: X12 at 6x6cm size.
