Malaria life-cycle, artwork

Malaria life-cycle. Computer artwork showing the life-cycle and transmission of malaria parasites. Anticlockwise from upper left: A mosquito bites and infects a person. Sporozoites in the mosquito's saliva enter the bloodstream and migrate to the liver (bottom centre), where they infect the cells and multiply into merozoites, which rupture the liver cells and escape back into the bloodstream. The merozoites then infect red blood cells (lower right), where they reproduce asexually. Sexual forms called gametocytes (upper right) are also produced, which are taken up by a mosquito (upper right) and infect the insect, which flies off to infect another host and continue the lifecycle
