Sir John Mowbray, Earl of Surrey and Warenne, Duke of Norfolk, and Earl Marshal (1472-1475-6), once held vast lands and titles, including the priories of St. Pancras and Castle Acre. In 1845, during an excavation at Southover Church, two cists bearing the heraldic arms of the Warenne family were discovered amongst the ruins of the Mount and Priory. These intricately designed cists, now on display, showcase the noble lineage of William Earl Warenne, whose arms can also be seen at Westminster Abbey in London. The rich history of the Warenne family, with their connections to priories and castles, continues to intrigue and inspire.
