EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful photograph captures the harsh reality of segregation in America during the late 1930s. In this image, we see a one-room African American schoolhouse located in Destrehan, Louisiana. The bell tower stands tall against the backdrop of a rural landscape, symbolizing hope and education for these young students. Taken by photographer Russell Lee in September 1938 as part of the Farm Security Administration (FSA) project, this image serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by African Americans during that era. The Great Depression had already inflicted economic hardships on many families, and now they were also forced to endure racial discrimination under Jim Crow laws. The dilapidated exterior of the schoolhouse reflects limited resources allocated to black communities at that time. Despite these obstacles, however, it is evident from this photograph that education was highly valued within this community. A lone pupil can be seen standing near the entrance, representing countless others who sought knowledge despite being denied equal opportunities. This photo highlights both resilience and injustice – an enduring testament to how far our society has come since then. It reminds us of the importance of equality and access to quality education for all individuals regardless of their race or background. Let it serve as a reminder that progress should never be taken for granted but continuously pursued so that no child is ever left behind again.
