Computer art of Ganymede cut away to show interior

Interior of Ganymede. Computer artwork of the interior of Ganymede, a moon of the planet Jupiter. This moon, the largest in the Solar System, has a small metal core (silver) surrounded by a layer of rock (beige). Around this is a layer of water ice (blue). The surface, also water ice, is heavily marked by fault lines. There is also evidence of volcanic activity, as brighter areas on the surface appear to be new, clean ice covering the darker, older layers. Ganymede also has a relatively strong magnetic field, caused by convection currents in the molten parts of its metal core. EDITORS COMMENTS

This computer artwork showcases the intricate interior of Ganymede, one of Jupiter's mesmerizing moons. As the largest moon in our Solar System, Ganymede hides a fascinating secret within its core. The print reveals a cutaway view, exposing the hidden layers that make up this celestial body. At its heart lies a small metal core, shimmering with silver hues. Surrounding this metallic center is a layer of rock, painted in soothing beige tones. Beyond that lies an ethereal layer of water ice, beautifully depicted in shades of blue. This icy shell envelops the moon and adds to its enchanting allure. The surface of Ganymede tells stories etched by time and geological activity. Fault lines crisscross the frozen landscape, bearing witness to countless cosmic events throughout history. Brighter areas on the surface indicate recent volcanic eruptions where fresh layers of pristine ice have covered older ones. Intriguingly, Ganymede possesses an unexpectedly strong magnetic field generated by convection currents within its molten metal core. This discovery adds another layer to our understanding of this enigmatic moon's complex composition. Through this stunning piece of artistry from Science Photo Library, we are transported into the depths of Ganymede's inner world—a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about distant realms beyond our own planet Earth.
