Adolphe Pegoud and Louis Bleriot, French aviators, Brooklands, Surrey, 1913
Adolphe Pe goud and Louis Bleriot, French aviators, Brooklands, Surrey, 1913. Adolphe Ce lestin Pe goud (1889-1915) was a test pilot for Bleriot (1872-1936), the French pilot and aircraft designer who was the first to fly across the Enlgish Channel. Pe goud famously looped the loop on 21 September 1913. It was publicised as the first successful completion of the manoeuvre but it later transpired that Pyotr Nesterov, a Russian army pilot, had achieved the feat 12 days earlier. Pe goud went on to become a successful flying instructor and the first fighter ace in World War I. He was shot down and killed on 31 August 1915, ironically by a German pilot he had taught before the war. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in aviation history, featuring Adolphe Pegoud and Louis Bleriot, two pioneering French aviators. Taken at Brooklands in Surrey in 1913, the image showcases the collaboration between these remarkable individuals who played crucial roles in shaping the future of flight. Adolphe Celestin Pegoud, known for his daring stunts and fearless spirit, served as a test pilot for Louis Bleriot. The latter was not only an accomplished pilot but also an innovative aircraft designer who achieved fame as the first person to fly across the English Channel. However, it is worth noting that while Pegoud's loop-the-loop maneuver on September 21st, 1913 gained widespread attention as the first successful completion of such a feat, it later emerged that Russian army pilot Pyotr Nesterov had actually accomplished it twelve days earlier. Despite this revelation, Adolphe Pegoud continued to make significant contributions to aviation. He became a renowned flying instructor and even earned distinction as World War I's first fighter ace. Tragically though ironically, he met his untimely demise on August 31st, 1915 when he was shot down by a German pilot whom he had taught before the war. This poignant photograph serves as both a testament to their groundbreaking achievements and a reminder of the risks faced by those who pushed boundaries during this transformative era of human flight.
