EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the regal presence of Albert I, King of the Belgians, in 1926. As the third king of Belgium, he succeeded his uncle Leopold II in 1909 and left an indelible mark on his nation's history. During World War I, when Belgium was invaded by German forces, Albert displayed immense courage and leadership by personally commanding her armed forces. His unwavering dedication to his country earned him a hero's welcome upon his return to Brussels at the end of the war. Tragically, this beloved monarch met an untimely demise in a climbing accident in the picturesque Ardennes region in 1934. The news of his death sent shockwaves throughout Belgium, and he was deeply mourned by his subjects. In this portrait, King Albert I is seen donning a military uniform that symbolizes both his role as commander-in-chief and his commitment to protecting Belgian sovereignty during times of conflict. The vibrant colors bring life to this historic image from the early 20th century. As we gaze upon this print today, we are reminded not only of King Albert I's significant contributions but also of the enduring legacy he left behind for future generations.
