EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the regal presence of Alexander II, Tsar of Russia, in 1900. Known as The Liberator, Alexander was a significant figure in Russian history for his role in emancipating the country's serfs in 1861. However, despite this progressive act, some believed that the pace of reform under his rule was too slow. Tragically, on March 13th, 1881, Alexander's life was cut short by an assassination attempt in St Petersburg. A nihilist student threw a bomb at him during a public appearance. This shocking act of regicide shook the nation and marked the end of an era. In this portrait engraving from "The Life and Times of Queen Victoria" by Robert Wilson (Volume IV), we see Emperor Alexander II dressed impeccably in his uniform. His face is stern yet dignified with a distinguished mustache adorning his upper lip. The monochrome image adds to its historical charm. As we gaze upon this photograph print today, we are reminded not only of the power and influence held by monarchs like Alexander but also of their vulnerability to acts of violence that can abruptly alter the course of history.
