Amerigo Vespucci (1471-1512), Italian-born Spanish explorer

Amerigo Vespucci (1471-1512), Italian-born Spanish explorer. Vespucci observing the constellation of the Southern Cross. During his voyages, Vespucci explored much of the eastern coast of South America. He believed that he was exploring a new unknown continent, in contrast to Columbus who thought he had reached the far east of Asia. America is named from the Latinised form of his name. The inset portrait on the left of the image is that of the poet Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), who mentioned the Southern Cross in Purgatory in his Divine Comedy

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Amerigo Vespucci, the renowned Italian-born Spanish explorer who played a crucial role in shaping our understanding of the world. In this image, Vespucci is depicted observing the constellation of the Southern Cross during his voyages along the eastern coast of South America. Unlike Columbus, who believed he had reached Asia, Vespucci recognized that he was exploring an entirely new continent. The inset portrait on the left features Dante Alighieri, a celebrated poet known for his Divine Comedy. It is fascinating to note that Dante mentioned the Southern Cross in Purgatory, further emphasizing its significance in both literature and exploration. This engraving from the 16th century beautifully captures Vespucci's dedication to navigation and discovery. The night sky serves as a backdrop for his contemplation of distant stars, symbolizing his relentless pursuit of knowledge and adventure. Amerigo Vespucci's contributions were so significant that they led to America being named after him. This print not only commemorates his achievements but also highlights how science and astronomy played pivotal roles in shaping our understanding of continents beyond Europe. With its historical depth and artistic composition, this print by Amerigo Vespucci, Joannes Stradanus, and Unknown (creator) offers viewers a glimpse into an era marked by exploration and intellectual curiosity.
