Anne, Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland - A Glimpse into the Reign of a Troubled Monarch

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the 17th century, showcasing Anne, Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland. Born in 1665 and reigning from 1702 until her death in 1714, Anne's rule witnessed significant political changes with the Acts of Union that united England and Scotland as Great Britain. Despite her royal status, Anne faced numerous challenges throughout her life. Plagued by ill health which affected her mobility and fertility, she relied heavily on moderate Tory politicians to govern the country. This portrait captures her regal presence adorned with exquisite jewelry befitting a monarch. The engraving is part of "Biographical Illustrations" a historical book authored by Alfred Howard in 1830. Published by Thomas Tegg, R. Griffin & Co. , J. Cumming in London, Glasgow and Dublin during the nineteenth century when interest in history was flourishing. Anne's reign marked an important era for both politics and religion as she upheld Anglicanism as the Church of England while facing tensions between Catholics and Protestants within society. This intriguing image invites us to reflect upon one woman's journey through power amidst personal struggles and political turmoil—a testament to the complexities inherent in leadership during this transformative period in British history.
