The Last Boat Leaves for the Ship, c1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

The Last Boat Leaves for the Ship, c1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

The Last Boat Leaves for the Ship, c1911

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a poignant print captured by Herbert Ponting during the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. This historic moment in 1913 marked the departure of the last boat from Antarctica, symbolizing both an end and a beginning. The Terra Nova Expedition, also known as the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), was a remarkable endeavor that aimed to continue scientific research while striving to be the first to reach the South Pole. Led by Scott, this diverse team included experts in various fields such as geology, zoology, surgery, photography, engineering, skiing, meteorology, and physics. Scott's ambition was shattered when he arrived at the South Pole on January 17th, 1912 only to discover that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already reached it a month earlier. Battling harsh blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey led to tragedy for Scott and his remaining team members - Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans. They perished at the end of March. This haunting image captures both hope and despair; it serves as a reminder of human resilience in pursuit of knowledge and exploration despite facing insurmountable challenges. The bodies and diaries were discovered eight months later - testament to their bravery and sacrifice. From "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume II published by Smith Elder & Co. , London in 1913; this photograph stands as an enduring tribute to these courageous men who ventured into uncharted territories with unwavering determination.
