EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the face of Bob Younger, an infamous American outlaw from the 19th century. Alongside his brothers Cole, John, and Jim, Bob formed a notorious gang known as the James-Younger gang, which terrorized the Wild West between 1869 and 1876. Together with Jesse and Frank James, they executed daring bank robberies, stagecoach heists, and train hold-ups. However, their criminal escapades came to a dramatic end when a posse captured them after robbing a bank in Northfield, Minnesota on September 7th, 1876. Although wounded during the confrontation that claimed John's life in 1874 at the hands of Pinkerton agents, Bob managed to survive long enough to face justice. In order to avoid hanging for their crimes, all three surviving Youngers pleaded guilty and were sentenced to life imprisonment. Tragically though not surprisingly given prison conditions at that time period; tuberculosis claimed Bob's life while incarcerated in Stillwater Prison in Minnesota in 1889. This powerful image is taken from "The Pictorial History of the Wild West" by James D Horan and Paul Sann published in London in 1954. It serves as a haunting reminder of America's lawless past - where outlaws like Bob Younger left an indelible mark on history through their audacious exploits within this untamed frontier land.
