Brentons Cove, 1872. Creator: W. J. Linton
Brentons Cove, 1872. The coast near Newport, Rhode Island, USA. Looking out from this cove, you might once have seen poor Burgoyne sailing for England after his sad defeat; Cooks famous ship Endeavor was condemned, dismantled, and left to decay upon these shores; the Macedonian, prize of the frigate United States, was brought to anchor here; the British fleet, under Lord Howe, and the French fleet, under D Estaing, both sailed by this rocky cove, one bringing misery and the other joy to the hearts of the old inhabitants of Rhode Island. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. I, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1872]

Brentons Cove, 1872 - A Glimpse into Rhode Island's Rich History
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print by W. J. Linton takes us back to the year 1872, offering a window into the storied past of Brentons Cove in Newport, Rhode Island. As we gaze upon this picturesque coastal scene, we are reminded of the significant events that unfolded on these very shores. In earlier times, poor Burgoyne sailed for England from this cove after his devastating defeat. Cook's renowned ship Endeavor met its fate here as well, condemned and left to decay upon these rocky shores. The Macedonian, once a prized frigate captured by the United States Navy during war with Britain, found anchorage in this historic haven. Brentons Cove also witnessed pivotal moments during the American Revolution when both British and French fleets sailed through its waters under Lord Howe and D'Estaing respectively. These opposing forces brought contrasting emotions to the hearts of Rhode Island's inhabitants – one bringing misery while the other brought joy. Through Linton's lens and artistic skill, he captures not only a breathtaking landscape but also invites us to reflect upon the rich tapestry of history woven within these coastal cliffs. This image is part of "Picturesque America; or The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant – an esteemed collection showcasing notable American artists. As we admire this remarkable piece of artistry today, let it serve as a reminder that every corner of our beloved country holds tales waiting to be discovered – stories that shape our present and inspire our future generations.
