Captain Franke fighting the Hereros, 1904, (1936). Hauptmann Franke Im Kampf Gegen Die Hereros, 1904. Lieutenant Colonel Victor Franke (1865-1936) was the last commander of the Schutztruppe (colonial troops in the African territories of the German colonial empire). He was involved in several campaigns against native tribes who resisted German colonial rule in German South West Africa. During the Herero Uprising of 1904, he became known as Hero of Omaruru, because of his victory over numerically superior Herero forces at Omaruru.
